Sri Lanka – Post-tsunami relief - the UNESCO Village
The building of this highly-successful ‘UNESCO Village’ for homeless fishing families on the south west coast of Sri Lanka began soon after the Tsunami at the beginning of 2005 and was inaugurated in October of the same year.

It has now carried on with the building of a pre-school and the erection of the first ground-floor school classrooms. Preparations are also underway for the building and furnishing of a professional training centre which should give young people greater chances in the labour market in the future. UNESCO plans to play a strong role here again in 2007 together with Malteser International and the Kreuzberger Kinderstiftung.
