India – Project Mala Charitable Trust, UK
The NGO Project Mala provides elementary education for rural children engaged in carpet weaving activities in five schools.
Child labour is a complex issue. It is both a cause and a consequence of poverty and illiteracy, nowhere is this more apparent than in India. Inappropriate and inadequate education facilities for children in rural areas have led the NGO Project Mala to provide elementary education for rural children engaged in carpet weaving activities in five schools. Three of these schools are now supported by UNESCO (Pathera, Amoi and Hasra in Mirzapur District, Uttar Pradesh). For each phase, UNESCO’s financial support consists in providing breakfast and lunch on the school premises for 250 children, medical care with monthly check ups and the provision of free medicines, books, stationery, schoolbags, uniforms, warm clothing and shoes, and vocational training in tailoring, carpet weaving and other skills that are highly marketable in the local district. This, in turn, contributes to paying part of the salaries for the educators and staff.
