Social and economic instability in Bolivia has created many new risks for lower income groups. According to recent data, almost 18 per cent of children are not attending school regularly and more and more are being driven to live on the streets. In 1988, in order to face this already dramatic situation and help children escape exploitation and negative behavioural patterns, an institution proposing new pedagogical methods was created by the NGO Enda Tiers Monde in El Alto, near La Paz. It aimed to offer street children a space of their own where they could regain strength, confidence and self-esteem.
