2nd General Conference of the European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR)

From 18 September to 20 September 2008, the European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR) will hold its second General Conference in the Italian city of Bologna. Representatives of more than 80 European cities, institutions as well as numerous civil society partners are expected to attend the Conference in order to consider the question of how to promote an inclusive society.

At the opening session on the evening of 18 September, Mr. Ion Diaconu, member of the Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), will gather together the Mayors of various European cities in order to discuss the challenges which municipal authorities are facing in the struggle against racism and discrimination, present strategies that have been put in place and to share the progress achieved.

The second day of the Conference will be entirely dedicated to working groups thus encouraging in-depth discussions and sharing of experiences on the major challenges to which modern cities have to face. Among the main topics discussed will be discrimination against Muslim communities, Sinti and Roma, the practical implementation of ECCAR’s Ten-Point Plan of Action as well as the development of tools for evaluating the local situation and the impact and results of antidiscrimination policies.

The Conference will furthermore stimulate reflection on the question of racism in sport. In addition to the panel “Football Unites - Racism divides“ organized by the German Academy for a Culture of Football, young people will be invited to consider the question of how to eradicate racism in sport as well as to propose ways for making sport a vehicle to promote tolerance, mutual respect and solidarity. In particular, they will be requested to present, discuss and enrich recommendations for local authorities elaborated during local consultations organized by ECCAR member cities over the past months. The Youth Forum is organized within the framework of the project “Youth Voices against Racism“, a joint project of UNESCO, the Football Club of Barcelona and the European Parliament and is implemented through ECCAR.

The final recommendations formulated by each working group, including the Youth Forum, will be presented to the plenary session on Saturday, 21 September.

On the occasion of the General Conference, the ECCAR Steering Committee will also meet.
