Collective Consultation on the promotion and development of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG)

From 16 to 20 January 2009, UNESCO representatives will attend the second Collective Consultation on the promotion and development of traditional sports and games (TSG) in Tehran (Iran).

Organized by UNESCO, in partnership with the Physical Education Organization (PEO) of Iran, the consultation will focus on the creation of the International Council on TSG. The secondary purpose of this event is to strengthen an international network on TSG, building on the framework of cooperation between UNESCO and the Physical Education Organization (PEO) of Iran, which was established during the first consultation in Tehran, in October 2008.

More than 20 experts from over 18 countries will be brought together to discuss the promotion of TSG, anti-doping, para-olympic sport and sport for women. The debate will inform the development of national and international strategies for the empowerment of specific minority groups. Participants include: Mr Kamal Guemmar, President of CIGEPS; Mr Detlef Dumon, Executive Director of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE); Mr Guy Jaouen, President of the European Association for Traditional Sports and Games; Mr Wojciech Liponski, Professor at the Laboratory of Sports Ethnology and Olympism; Mr Rif Gayanov, President of the International Association of Traditional Wrestling Sports (IATWS); amongst other specialists in the field.

A letter of understanding on mutual cooperation, endorsed by the two parties in October 2008, will be used as a roadmap for further cooperation, and to develop national sport policies with the support of the Iranian National Commission to UNESCO. It is intended to develop and reinforce UNESCO activities in Iran, in line with the national position and specifically focussing on “Competitive Sport” and “Recreational Activities and Sport for All”.
