Organized within the framework of the International Day of Peace (21 September) and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ceremony was attended by Mohammed Arkoun and Javier Perez de Cuellar, respectively President and Member of the International Jury for the UNESCO Prize.

It began with the screening of an excerpt of the documentary film "Truth, Justice and Memory: The Process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa." While recalling the horror of apartheid, with exhumed skeletons, witnessing the reality of murders and broken destinies, this documentary aims at developing the concept of sustained conviviality based on peace and reconciliation.

This objective, which is an on-going process and calls for education efforts, is one that the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation has set as well, as recalled Fanie du Toit. It is also the whole meaning of the video message shown at the ceremony from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, charismatic figure of South Africa's political and social life, who warned that "vigilance is the price of peace."
