Read the editorial in English A Russian version of this Editorial is also available Abstract The current thematic issue continues the debate on democratic governance in multi-religious societies through an investigation of a particular case, the Russian Federation. As a concomitant to social transformation processes, religion has in fact regained political importance in many post-communist countries. First, the reconstruction of national identities accompanying processes of post-communist democratisation has often drawn on the symbolism of those religious traditions that had been closely involved in nation-building and state-formation prior to the rise of communism. Yet post-communist democratisation has also entailed intensified public debates over the respect for the individual's right to religious freedom and, hence, the recognition of religious diversity. These somewhat contradictory trends are well exemplified by recent developments in the Russian Federation and are addressed by the contributions to this issue from a social science perspective.
