Urban Development Research Programme (UPRD)
Incentive concerted action under the Priority Solidarity Fund of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Urban Development Research Programme (UPRD) The programme is conducted by GEMDEV and ISTED.


The objectives of the UPRD are:

-to re-launch urban development research based on a thematic renewal;

-to produce knowledge concerning the processes of urbanisation in countries in the South with the purpose of contributing to urban policies;

-to establish, in this field, strategic partnerships between the French scientific community and the scientific communities of the "solidarity zone" countries.


UNESCO's involvement

UNESCO's Urban Developmen Section has joined forces with this urban policy research network. An international conference to discuss scientific research on urban development, entitled "Governing the cities of the South: Challenges for research and action" was held at UNESCO, from 5-7 May 2004, with the attendance of decision-makers and researchers from about thirty developing countries.

This kind of partnership should encourage the building of bridges between research and action and, in turn, help strengthen the urban development process through encouraging links between the world of research and that of decision-makers, and between theory and practice.
