Human Rights: The Heart of UNESCO in Asia-Pacific

01.12.2015

UNESCO Bangkok to highlight one initiative of its work per day in lead-up to International Human Rights Day (10 December)

UNESCO Bangkok has a broad and ambitious mandate in Asia-Pacific, covering all aspects of the organization’s specialized areas: education, sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO Bangkok’s actions in these diverse areas have been united by the unwavering belief in the fundamental importance of promoting and respecting the human rights and dignity of those we serve in Asia-Pacific.

These beliefs date back to the earliest days of the organization. One day after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was promulgated on 10 December 1948, UNESCO passed a special resolution that proclaimed its importance to all of the organization’s activities, committing it to promoting the declaration and its principles.

Now as UNESCO celebrates its 70th anniversary, the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day is alive and well in Asia-Pacific. Starting today and leading up to International Human Rights Day, we will be featuring initiatives from the Bangkok office that show the many ways in which human rights are at the heart of all of UNESCO’s activities in Asia-Pacific.
