St. Kitts & Nevis - Camp Sanguine

E-mail Print PDF

The Ambassadors of Cayon High (past students) implemented a camp geared towards providing varied opportunities for a group of current students of a lower socio-economic status to discover their true being and self-worth.

 Who's involved?

Project coordinator: Claricia Langley

Lead organisation: Ambassadors of Cayon High

Other organisations: Ministry of Community and Social development; Health Promotion Unit; Department of Youth

Timeframe: May 2006 – January 2007

Objectives:

  • To provide an opportunity for participants to experience camp life
  • For participants to share and gain knowledge with their peers on current issues that directly affect their way of life.
  • For participants to be ambassadors for their class and school in general
  • To have fun in a learning environment
  • To teach youth the importance of a quality education, community building and the value of volunteering

Activities:

  • Participants were selected by the Guidance Counseling Department of Cayon High.
  • Each participant made a commitment to a volunteer project to be carried out in the 4 months following the training sessions;
  • A short follow-up meeting 4 months after the training sessions to share information on the volunteer activities conducted was organised;
  • An evaluation of the impact of the project by (a) conducting a questionnaire/survey before the start of the training sessions and repeating it at the end of the project and analysing the results, and (b) analysing the number and nature of the volunteer projects carried out;
  • Publicity and promotional activities to include newspapers, radio and television;
  • Photographs and at least 60 minutes un-edited video footage of the various events and activities.
  • Training sessions were conducted in career development, volunteering, HIV/AIDS, and lifeskills development;

Results:

The camp was evaluated and was said to be an experience to be treasured. Campers have already made plans to attend next year’s camp.

They left the camp with a better knowledge of most things as it relates to the group and their school but particularly about the importance of their choices in life and the consequences. It is our hope that they will make informed choices as they grow.
