Dynamic learning led by children themselves has been a resounding success at 119 pilot schools in the West Bank and Gaza. More than 30,000 children and their teachers have benefited from a programme run by UNESCO Ramallah office in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and UNRWA that teaches the curriculum through themes like music, nature, peace, gender and culture to teach. Today the world is home to more displaced persons than at any time in recorded history, leading to complex challenges for many countries as they try to manage these flows and successfully welcome these new citizens.
Yet these challenges are made even harder by a lack of accurate, accessible information in the media, where myth and misinformation are prevalent. At best, coverage concentrates on refugees as victims and the wider humanitarian implications, and at worst focuses on the challenges involved or the imagined threat of a sudden influx of outsiders. Almost completely missing from media coverage are the multiple benefits for the host countries, and the countless stories of individuals, often highly educated and eager to work, seeking a new life and contributing positively to their new societies.
South Sudan herders sat down in their first ever classroom to become community trainers as part of a joint UNESCO - FAO funded project by EU. World Heritage Committee to meet in Istanbul from 10 to 20 July.
The Committee will examine proposals to inscribe 26 sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List during its 40th session : nine natural, 14 cultural and three mixed sites, i.e. properties that are outstanding both for their natural and cultural characteristics.
It will also examine the state of conservation of 108 sites already on the World Heritage List and of 48 sites on the World Heritage in Danger List.
