Training-of-Trainers Workshop at Regional Level
Macao SAR China, January 2009
This workshop was organized by UNESCO Bangkok, in collaboration with the Beijing and Jakarta offices. It was hosted by the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) with support from the World Heritage Fund and brought together representatives from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
The primary goal of the five day workshop was to develop national curricular for guide training as per UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide (CHSG) programme for each of the represented countries. Participants examined the strengths, limitations and opportunities of CHSG training in the represented countries. They were also introduced to the UNESCO Regional Knowledge and Skills Standards (RKSS), which enabled them to create curriculums that built upon the strengths of existing national training systems while also meeting the requirements of the UNESCO regional standards.
Participants successfully drafted national training curriculums and roadmaps for implementation, set to close the identified gaps in knowledge, skills and instruction for guides. Each delegation planned for national consultations with appropriate stakeholders, such as tourism industry representatives, tour guide associations, and training institutions to stimulate the application of training programmes.

Training-of-Trainers Workshops at Sub-regional Levels
The phase 1 is dedicated to Training of Trainers via a series of sub-regional workshops. Participants are drawn from training institutions from both the tourism and culture sectors. The aim is to introduce the selected trainers to the training programme, teach them the core and sub regional thematic material, refine lesson plans and teaching methods and plan for national implementation of the programme.
South Asia
Paro, Bhutan, 6-11 May 2006
The training of trainers workshop for Cultural Heritage Specialist guide Programme in the South Asia Sub-region was held from 6 to 11 May 2006 at the Zhiwaling Hotel in Paro, Bhutan by UNESCO in conjunction with the Royal Government of Bhutan under the framework of the ADB-supported Human Resource Development component of the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Tourism Development Plan (TDP).
The workshop brought together 21 participants from the tourism and heritage sectors in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, with the majority representing National Tourism Organizations (NTOs). Participants were divided into cross-country groups for the purposes of interactive group work and sub-regional exchange. The training team was composed of member institutions of the AAHM with the Institute For Tourism Studies (IFT) and the University of Hong Kong serving as the lead training focal point.

The Greater Maekong Sub-region
Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, October 2006
The Training of Trainers Workshop for the Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide Programme in Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) countries was held from 6-15 October 2006. The meeting was co-ordinated by UNESCO with the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) as a focal point, in conjunction with the Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA) under the framework of the Mekong Tourism Development Project (MTDP). The workshop brought together 29 participants from the tourism and heritage sectors in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand.
During the nine-day training period, participants explored issues concerning tourism at UNESCO World Heritage sites, particularly in the GMS. As a main result of the training workshop, participants developed the curriculum for adopting the programme in their home countries.
Following the workshop, UNESCO received expressions of interest from both public and private stakeholders in both the tourism and culture sectors to launch the programme at the national level.

UNESCAP-UNESCO GMS Training of Trainers Workshop on Cultural Tourism Sites Management and Sites
Within the framework of two programmes “Human Resource Development in Tourism in the GMS region” developed by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), "Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide Programme” initiated by UNESCO, UNESCAP and UNESCO collaborated to deliver training in 2007-8 in the GMS region in order to raise the institutional capacity to train both site managers as well as heritage guides in the sustainable management of tourism at heritage properties.
A series of four national training of trainer workshops in Viet Nam, Thailand, Lao PDR and Cambodia, respectively, were undertaken in close collaboration with national tourism organizations, ministries of tourism and ministries of culture. Authorities charged with the protection and tourism development of World heritage properties and heritage properties were closely involved in the design and delivery of the workshops. Technical and financial support was provided by the IFT, ADB, the Government of France and members of the Asia-Pacific Education and Training Institutes in Tourism (APETIT) network and member institutions from the AAHM.

South-East Asia
Khon Kaen, Thailand, 26-27 May 2008
This workshop was organized by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in close collaboration with UNESCO and with the financial assistance of the Government of France. Participants included tourism and culture government officials, representatives of education/training institutes from Cambodia, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The objective of the regional seminar is to provide a forum for concerned participants from the GMS countries to assess how the project has impacted on the overall national human resources development in the tourism sector and whether the training materials produced under the project are effective in this respect. It is also expected that the regional seminar will be able to reflect on the development of national follow-up training programmes and measures to enhance regional cooperation in this area.

Borobudur, Indonesia, August 2009
The Borobudur Training of the Trainers Workshop was organized by UNESCO, Jakarta in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia. The workshop brought together 30 participants from the tourism and heritage sectors in Brunei, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor Leste and Thailand. As the second of two workshops, the training provided practical tools to the participants that will allow them to effectively deliver their tailored national curriculums to local guides.
The workshop ran for five days and included an introduction to the Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide (CHSG) Programme, a review of modular training materials, assessment methodology and recommended teaching techniques. Each delegation also finalized an implementation plan for rolling out the programme to guides at national World Heritage sites.
