<p><font color="#009933"><strong>Literacy Projects and Activities</strong></font></p>

The International Plan of Action for the UN Literacy Decade has been developed in response to Paragraph 11 of RESOLUTION 56/116 in which the General Assembly requested the Director-General of UNESCO to cooperate with the Secretary-General in seeking comments and proposals from Governments and relevant international organizations in order to develop and finalize a well targeted and action-oriented plan to be submitted to the General Assembly at its 57th session.

UNESCO Institute for Statistics' (UIS) Literacy Assessment and Monitoring Programme (LAMP)
LAMP is an initiative of the UIS in cooperation with other international agencies to carry out a survey to measure literacy levels in developing countries. It is a cross-national and comparable literacy assessment survey, meaning it is a household survey where individuals are interviewed and asked to take a test to measure their literacy skills.

LAMP aims to produce in-depth information on the level and distribution of acquired functional literacy and numeracy skills of adults, as well as information on the link of these skills to key economic and social outcomes and to underlying determining factors. LAMP is intended to serve a range of policy needs including priority setting, resource allocation, programme design, advocacy, social marketing and programme evaluation. It is expected that countries will repeat the LAMP survey on a five to ten year interval in order to monitor trends in the performance of different groups in the population. It is a new programme requiring considerable methodological development. This is conducted in collaboration with LAMP pilot countries which include El Salvador, Kenya, Mongolia, Morocco and Niger. LAMP Light Literacy Module
UNESCO Bangkok's AIMS Unit and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, with financial assistance from the Japanese Government, are developing a "light literacy module to measure functional literacy through household surveys”. Survey results will provide more informative literacy statistics by measuring individual literacy skills through scientific methodology with linkages to other socio-economic information.

Data derived from the surveys can be used as a monitoring tool to assess national and regional progress towards the achievement of Education for All goal on literacy, and as information for making appropriate policies and actions. Literacy Initiative for the Excluded (LIFE)
As the coordinator of the UN Literacy Decade, UNESCO has launched LIFE with the goal of contributing to the 50% improvement in levels of adult literacy, with emphasis on women, by 2015. The initiative covers 33 countries, nine of which are in Asia and the Pacific: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea.
