Risk Reduction Responses

Disaster risk reduction is considered to be a vital element of Education for Sustainable Development and is being considered carefully within the DESD. Building a disaster-resilient society can only become a reality if practices of disaster-risk reduction are included in formal and informal education in areas at risk.

The continued failure to manage natural resources, the demographic pressure and human settlements in fragile ecosystems and the increased demand on environment, are among the main causes of environmental degradation and comes in addition to the threat of global climate change and rising sea levels.

According to the Global Assessment of Risk (2009), unplanned urbanization and environmental degradation result in population growth around disaster-prone areas, a factor which greatly increases disaster risk. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a developmental and humanitarian concern to UNESCO.
