Overview and Context of Education Policies

Day 1 will provide an introduction to key concepts of language policy and planning in the context of multilingual education. Participants will discuss definitions of important concepts, key issues, current trends, international perspectives, research evidence and current challenges. The three main ideas of the course are “mother tongue”, “multilingual education” and “language policy and planning”. These main ideas will be set against the institutional, organization, economic, social and political contemporary context of Asian societies and worldwide trends and evidence of good practice in education and policy.

Policy and Planning in and beyond Education

Day 2 will focus on the processes of planning language education, which results in language policy. Policy and planning should pay attention to literacy, mother tongues, national languages, international languages, across the entire education spectrum from early childhood education through formal schooling and non-formal schooling, to post school settings.
