Regional Workshop on Integrating Conflict and Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) into Education Sector Plans, Curricula and Budgets

Background:
As part of a regional project, “Capacity Development for Ministries of Education on Education and Resilience: Crisis-sensitive Educational Planning and Curriculum to Strengthen Resilience, Social Cohesion and Comprehensive School Safety in East Asia and Pacific”, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (UNICEF EAPRO), UNESCO Asia and the Pacific Regional Bureau for Education (UNESCO Bangkok), the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Secretariat (SEAMES), SEAMEO Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH), UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO IIEP) and Protect Education from Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC) are co-organizing a regional workshop on “Integrating Conflict and Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) into Education Sector Plans, Curricula and Budgets” from 19 to 23 October 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The workshop aims to enhance the capacity of education planners and curriculum experts to: 1) analyse the risks of conflict and disaster in the education sector; 2) design policies, programmes and curriculum for the reduction of conflict and disaster risks; 3) identify relevant indicators for these programmes in order to monitor progress towards the objectives; and 4) cost programmes as an integral part of the education sector’s planning and budgeting.
The co-organizers hope that this capacity development initiative on crisis-sensitive educational planning targeted on a select group of countries in the Asia-Pacific region will: a) provide a theoretical framework for key educational planners and curriculum developers in a range of countries; b) provide practical and concrete tools and guidelines for integrating C/DRR in education planning and curriculum development; c) foster knowledge sharing and learning across countries; and d) provide an opportunity for action planning which will enable representatives to apply their learning directly in their country context.

UNESCO/IIEP Distance Education Course on “Educational Planning for Safety, Resilience, and Social Cohesion”
The International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO-IIEP) is organizing a distance education course on’ Educational Planning for Safety, Resilience and Social Cohesion’ to be held from 19 October to 18 December 2015.
The course aims to reinforce the capacity of participants to analyse the impact of risks and integrate safety, resilience and social cohesion measures in national education sector planning processes. Senior ministry staff and development partner organization representatives from 10 countries in Sub-Sahara Africa, Asia and South America will participate in this year’s course.
The course was developed and is being undertaken with support from UNICEF East Asia and Pacific (EAPRO), UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa (ESARO) and Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC).
