6th Asia-Pacific Experts Consultation: Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability

The 6th Asia-Pacific Experts Consultation: Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability was held from 22 to 25 August 2006 in Penang, Malaysia. It was co-organized by UNESCO Bangkok, Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The meeting was funded by Korean Funds-in-Trust to UNESCO.
 
The objectives of the meeting were to provide a forum for participants to identify  the key components of Education for International Understanding (EIU)/Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with regard to teacher education, to establish a regional network of teacher education institutions on reorienting teacher education to address sustainability and to develop action plans for participants to carry out in their own local context and institutional settings; and activities for the network to carry out.  

A total of 46 participants from 15 countries took part in the consultation and they were from ministries of education, universities, educational and research institutes, regional training institutes, regional centres of expertise on ESD, and schools.

The first day of the programme was spent on understanding EIU/ESD with its various perspectives, concepts and content and the discussion revolves around the difficult task on how to integrate these different components.

The issue of reorienting teacher education to address sustainability was taken up on the second day and this was followed by a session on show cases of innovative practices at the regional, national and institutional level and another session on resources on ESD/EIU.

The programme for the third day was a series of group activities on learning, teaching and training in ESD/EIU, and on the last day the participants worked in small groups to explore the possibilities of establishing a regional network of Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) to incorporate ESD/EIU in their teacher education policies, programmes and activities and to identify potential areas of collaboration.

The working groups came up with 4 potential areas of collaboration, namely advocacy, joint research, capacity building and information/resource sharing.

Based on the suggestions from the participants during this consultation, UNESCO Bangkok will take necessary follow-up actions such as setting up the listserve of regional network of TEIs, producing a set of advocacy briefs on ESD, compiling and disseminating available resources on ESD/EIU and other related areas, initiating a joint research and exploring the possibilities of organizing capacity building workshop on how to design courses on ESD and how to train teachers to incorporate ESD in their classroom practices and schools for group members in 2007.
