Bangkok (Thailand
12-14 July 2010

On 12-14 July 2010, innovative ESD initiatives were showcased during the Regional Seminar on ESD in Action in Bangkok, Thailand.

This event was part of a series of activities under the Mobile Training Team (MTT) Project, funded by Japanese Funds-in-Trust, to reorient teacher education to address sustainability. The MTT project is a response to an overwhelming need for ESD curricula in pre-service teacher education and for relevant ESD teaching and learning materials.

The project has facilitated collaborative efforts among teacher education networks in the Asia and Pacific region, involving deans and directors of teacher education institutions (TEIs), teacher educators and teachers, to share challenges and lessons learned in incorporating ESD into specific school subjects, namely, science and social studies.

The Regional Seminar, jointly organized by UNESCO and the Thailand National Commission for UNESCO, successfully achieved its objectives to:

  • share experiences and lessons learned from initiatives taken by members of ESD-Net;
  • show case good practices of ESD in schools and teacher education institutions; and
  • expose participants to knowledge, perspectives, issues and values relating to climate change, human and food security.

Among the 90 participants who attended the event were teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, government officials and deans of TEIs from Asia-Pacific countries.
