How to Bridge the Gap through ICT?

Objectives:

• To increase understanding of trends, issues, hopes and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in TVET;
• To showcase the integration of ICT as a way to improve quality of TVET for the changing world of work (e.g. ICT enabled student-centred pedagogy, linking curriculum content with labour market needs, augmented authentic learning with simulations etc.);
• To showcase innovative ICT-supported teacher training in TVET.

Key questions:

• What are the key trends, issues, prospects and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in TVET?
• How can innovative ICT-supported skills development programmes enhance learning experiences in formal and informal TVET to address the changing needs of the workplace?
• What are the policy responses (e.g. strategies, budgets, standards, etc.) to promote integration of ICT in TVET institutions? And, how do the ministries/directorates/departments provide support to TVET institutions to promote the integration of ICT?
• How can innovative ICT-supported teacher training programmes improve teachers’ instructional practices in formal and informal TVET?

Outline: 

This session will stimulate discussions on how ICT can improve relevance and quality, and expand access to TVET provision. Three ICT experts in TVET have been invited to share their insights into how different countries are innovatively applying ICT in response to the emerging challenges and needs in skills development.

More specifically, Dr. Thang will give a general overview of issues related to integrating ICT in teaching and learning in TVET. Dr. Abas will elaborate on policy responses to promote the integration of ICT to address emerging challenges in TVET in Malaysia, and Mr. Mabille will share his experiences with an ICT-supported teacher development programme in TVET in Cambodia.

In essence, the session will identify the key trends, issues, hopes and challenges of integrating ICT in teaching and learning in TVET, showcase some innovative practices that harness ICT as ways to improve the pedagogy of TVET to meet the changing skills needs of a digital society, and use ICT innovatively to increase the quality of teacher training in TVET.

The discussions will focus on innovative examples and their theoretical underpinnings in addressing the key questions of this session.  Each intervention will consist of a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 10-minute interactive discussion with session participants. It is expected that by the end of the session participants will have a clearer understanding of key issues and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in TVET, what can be learned from the showcased experiences, and what should be the future priorities for countries in this area.
