Bioethics and Biotechnology Museum exhibition

The Bioethics and Biotechnology Museum exhibition opened on 1 February 2008, at the Science Centre for Education (SCE), 7th floor, 924 Sukhumvit Rd). The display was the result of a three way partnership between RUSHSAP, UNESCO, the SCE together with BIOTEC.

The bilingual displays are open everyday except mondays, and arrangements for student group visits can be made, through contacting rushsap(at)unescobkk.org   A floorplan (pdf file) is here.

On 18 September, 2009, a second display was opened in the Science centrum, Manila, the Philippines, with the cooperation of the Science centrum and RUSHSAP.

The aims of the exhibition are to:
Develop interactive educational exhibits (including multimedia and other methods) to assist in the learning process.
Develop methods and tools for assessment of learner understanding of biotechnology and bioethics.
Raise awareness of bioethical and related issues.
Provide sound information about technologies that impact people’s lives as well as future implications.

The exhbition focuses on areas related to the importance of biotechnology and bioethics issues related to GMO, cloning and stem cells, medical genetics, gene therapy, as well as energy ethics, construction ethics, research ethics, ethics and space, clothing and ethics, and other diverse areas.

The organizers hope the workshop will act as a model to encourage teachers and parents to become partners in helping educate their children to think about the implication of bioethics as a result of advancement in biotechnology. The lesson learned from this workshop will be use for consideration for future activities both in Thailand and overseas.

In May 2010 a second exhbition on Biodiversity and Ethics was opened as a result of collaboration between RUSHSAP and SCE, and in addition some road show exhbitions were held across Thailand.

Since the end of 2007 there have been a number of workshops conducted on bioethics education. For example, on 1st February 2008, BIOTEC, the Science Centre for Education (SCE), the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), and RUSHSAP, UNESCO organized a three days Teacher Training Workshop for Exhibition of Biotechnology and Bioethics at the Science Centre for Education.  Similar Thai language events were held on other occasions. On 29 August, 2008 and in 2009 UNESCO training workshops for teaching Bioethics was held in English. Other events are expected.
