Awareness Raising for Mongolian Youth through World Heritage Education: Launching and Training Workshop of ‘Heritage in a Box’ Toolkit
As part of the initiative to raise awareness among Mongolian youths on heritage values through World Heritage Education, the ‘Heritage in a Box’ toolkit will be launched on 17 March 2016 at Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Ulaanbaatar. On 19-20 March 2016, 14 educators from provinces located around the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape World Heritage site will subsequently be trained on the utilization of the toolkit in Kharkhorin soum.
The ‘Heritage in a Box’ toolkit is an interactive and portable resource kit designed for teachers and students between 3rd to 12th grades in Mongolia. Containing a range of information that can help Mongolian youths understand and appreciate the heritage of their region, the toolkit is targeted for use in schools by teachers to incorporate heritage values into the classroom.
Produced under the UNESCO/Monaco Funds-in-trust project “Strengthening Mongolian Capacities for the Fight against the Illicit Traffic of Cultural Objects’ that took place from 2009-2015, the ‘Heritage in a Box’ toolkit will be officially launched on 17 March 2016 at Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Ulaanbaatar, under the UNESCO 2016-2017 activity “Awareness Raising for Mongolian Youth through World Heritage Education”. A two-day training workshop will subsequently take place from 19-20 March 2016 at Kharakhorum Museum, Kharkhorin soum, Uvurkhangai province. During which, 14 educators will be trained by specialists on ways to utilize the toolkit in their respective schools.

The activity is jointly organized by UNESCO Beijing Office with the Training and Research Institute on World Heritage in Mongolia NGO, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia, the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO and the Management Office of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site.
Participating schools in this pilot phase of toolkit training and utilization include seven partner schools from Kharkhorin, Khujirt and Bat-Ulzii soums of Uvurkhangai province; and Khotont and Khashaat soums of Arkhangai province.
