This project aimed to use sports to raise awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDS for the young people of the region of Majunga.

Lead organisation: Association des Jeunes de Millénaire VITASOA, Majunga, Madagascar

Other organisations: OCB (Organisation de Communauté de Base) youth club on HIV/AIDS (to help promote the activities of the project); Cabinet d’étude ZAVA; Service Régional du Projet VIH/SIDA (assistance with documentation and advice); Service Régional des jeunesses et sport; Majunga Press.

Timeframe: March - November 2009

Activities:

  • Two sports tournaments: football for the males and basketball for the females in 10 neighbourhoods of the city of Majunga;
  • During these sporting events, 300 books were distributed and over 1000 flyers and brochures;
  • They were also accompanied by sound effects, posters and banners in order to promote HIV and AIDS awareness to the participants and the wider public.

Results:

  • Results from a survey showed a 28% improvement in the HIV and AIDS awareness of young people in the 10 districts.
