Asia Pacific Coalition of Cities against Discrimination

Thailand will host the International Conference on the Coalition of Cities against Discrimination in June 2016. The Asia-Pacific Coalition of Cities against Discrimination was formed in 2006, holding its first meeting that year in Bangkok. The 2016 will be the 10th Anniversary of the activities on the UNESCO Coalition of Cities against Discrimination in Asia and the Pacific.

The Coalition was formed to enable cities to work together to tackle issues resulting from discrimination. Over the last 10 years central and local authorities from across Asia and the Pacific have focused on a range of issues such as housing, disability and education. This International Conference will focus on social inclusion and will feed at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development (known as Habitat III) to take place in Quito, Ecuador from 17-20 October 2016.

There are twenty-five participating countries across Asia-Pacific, more than five thousand participating cities, municipalities, municipal associations, provincial governments and institutions. They are also part of a growing and coordinated movement through the International Coalition of Cities Against Racism and Discrimination (ICCAR), with chapters in Africa, Canada and USA, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Arab region and Europe.

The 2016 Conference will be an opportunity for central and local authorities to discuss and share good policies and practices on sustainable urban development and social cohesion, develop an agenda for the next decade and prepare for participation in Habitat III. The conference themes will cover inclusive cities, urban spatial strategies and social cohesion.

Further information on the Conference will be available on www.unescobkk.org/rushsap
