The Niue Youth Council conducted youth-led activities to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS in Niue.

Timeframe: April 2010-November 2011 

Objectives:

  • Promote understanding among youth of the implications of the lack of recognition of human rights for people living with HIV or AIDS, in terms of both loss of dignity and spread of the epidemic.
  • Inform youth about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and of preventative measures to protect themselves.
  • Increase awareness of young people with regards to HIV & AIDS, arming them with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions that will benefit their lives.
  • Enable young people to discuss more openly sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and their reproductive health needs.
  • Produce awareness material that appealed to youth, taking into consideration their needs.

Activities:

  • The production of a series of awareness-raising materials
  • The hosting of events, including drama shows at which key messages about HIV/AIDS, STIs and reproductive health are disseminated
  • The organization of a Youth Forum focused on HIV/AIDS, STIs and reproductive health including drama, debates, quizzes and other activities.
