Irina Bokova meets with Nepal's leadership

Meeting with Nepal’s President, Prime Minister and senior authorities one year after a devastating earthquake incurred huge loss of life and extensive damage, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova pledged her solidarity and determination to support the country’s recovery, democratic transition and inclusive development in Kathmandu on 18 April.

Visit to Durbar Square and Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Valley

Accompanied by the Director of the Department of Archaeology, the Director-General viewed the devastation caused by the April 25,2015 earthquake to the iconic temples and palaces of Durbar Square and Hanuman Dhoka, part of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site. Many were reduced to rubble, including landmarks such as the Kastamandap and Maju Dega Temples, while others were partially destroyed. The Director-General viewed the painstaking work of inventorying statues, delicate wood carvings and other pieces, and UNESCO's assistance in this process.  

Director-General visits Shikarapur Community Learning Centre

To the beat of drums and cymbals, hundreds of schoolchildren and women lined a steep hillside path overlooking the Kathmandu Valley to welcome UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to the Shikarapur Community Learning Centre, on 18 April 2016. She inaugurated a new building, the Lifelong Learning Resource Centre, reconstructed after the earthquake with funds raised by the community. The Centre is supported by UNESCO’s CapEFA programme.

On Buddha’s Trail, from Lumbini to Tilaraukot

From Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova commended international efforts to combine safeguarding with the balanced development of a spiritual site that represents a universal message of peace, on 19 April 2016.

Tilaurakot Community Learning Centre

Literacy in mother tongue at the Tilaurakot Community Learning Centre is breaking isolation and creating new prospects for marginalized populations, in this historic area where a vast archaeological complex tracing back to Lord Buddha’s early life as a Prince has been recently unearthed.
