Fund Supporting Creative Professionals in the Developing World Secures First Private Foundation Donation

The Aileen Getty Foundation has made a 15,000 Euro donation to UNESCO’s International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) at a special event highlighting the need for more support for filmmakers from the developing world. The event took place on the side-lines of the International Cannes Film Festival 2016 (May 18).

UNESCO’s Fund empowers artists, strengthens cultural policy-making - contributing towards economic and social changes in emerging and developing countries. The IFCD is part of the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and is primarily financed by its Parties and some individual contributions.

The money donated by The Aileen Getty Foundation marks the start of a new era for the Fund, which is reaching out to private foundations and companies to enable cultural entrepreneurs to benefit from the Fund. Without this type of financial support small businesses and enterprises are unable to apply for funding. 

‘’The IFCD has reached a turning point and this new donation from a private foundation means that we can expand our work in strengthening the creative industries globally and make an even bigger impact in sustainable development in Africa and other countries around the world,’’ said Danielle Cliche, Secretary of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The International New York Times also partnered with UNESCO for the event at the Cannes Film Festival through a promotional advert, calling on readers to support the Fund.

Since 2010, the IFCD has provided around US$ 5.8 million in funding for 84 projects in 49 developing countries. The financing has covered a wide range of areas, including the reshaping of cultural policies, training of cultural entrepreneurs, mapping of creative industries and the creation of new business models.
