UNESCO Activities of relevance for the International Day of Peace 2005

Through resolution 55/282, the United Nationals General Assembly designated 21 September as the “International Day of Peace”, inviting Member States, international organizations and civil society to commemorate it each year in an appropriate way. Find out more at the Day's offical website.

In addition to the activities of individual UNESCO Field Offices – the Organization will be hosting the 4th International Youth Forum.   From 30 September to 2 October 2005, young people from all regions will gather at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to discuss the theme ‘Young people and the Dialogue among Cultures, Civilizations and Peoples’ and to propose concrete action supporting the dialogue in education, the sciences, culture and communication. This theme will be debated in plenary sessions and working groups and result in a final report with young people's recommendations and proposals for concrete action, which will be presented to the opening session of the 33rd General Conference.

Working groups will focus on the following themes:

(i) All different, all unique: celebrating cultural diversity through dialogue

(ii) Safeguarding the future: practising dialogue for sustainable development

(iii) Learning to live together: promoting dialogue for peace and reconciliation
