Monitoring knowledge societies

The UIS is currently developing new surveys and methodologies needed to help track the ways in which people access and use media and information and generate knowledge in the digital age. In particular, the UIS media survey provides a global perspective on print, broadcast and digital media. The Institute has also developed a new survey to monitor trends in the educational use of information and communication technologies (ICT).  Furthermore, we are developing a new methodology to help countries measure the media and information literacy skills of their citizens.

Our work in this field entails close collaboration with UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector, experts, national statisticians and other statistical agencies.

The Institute contributes to UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and the Information for All Programme (IFAP). The UIS is also an active member of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, which was established through the World Summit on Information Society.
