Event: Measuring the economic contribution of culture

Panel discussion to explore the challenges of collecting data

On 23 June 2012, during the 17th International Conference on Cultural Economics, in Kyoto, Japan, the UIS will convene an expert panel to discuss “The Measurement of the Economic Contribution of Cultural Industries,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.

The purpose of the session is to discuss experiences of collecting data on how cultural industries contribute to the economy. The discussion is expected to inform the work of the UIS, which is producing a handbook entitled “A Methodology for Measuring the Economic Contribution of Cultural Industries” as part of the upcoming UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics (FCS) Handbook Series.

View the full programme.

About the handbook

Since the 1990’s, policymakers have begun to recognise how culture contributes to economic development. Many studies have tried to analyse the role of cultural industries in regional, national and local economies. While a few models exist, each proposes a different methodology that may not be universally applicable, especially in a developing country context.

The UIS is pursuing the development of a new methodology and guidelines that aim to be complementary to these approaches and applicable in different country contexts. The handbook will provide guidelines, discuss best practices and provide a methodology for measuring the economic contribution of cultural industries.

The first phase of the development of the handbook -- a comparative analysis of current methodologies -- will be published in autumn 2012.
