The 2016 International Conference on the "Challenges in Environmental Science and Engineering" (CESE-2016) will be held from 6 to 10 November 2016 and will take place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. This is the ninth international conference in the CESE series. UNESCO-IHE and CESE-2016 will launch a special thematic session titled ''Chalcogens and the role of metals in the environment.''

Special thematic session: ''Chalcogens and the role of metals in the environment''

Chalcogens are elements belonging to periodic table group 16 and include the elements oxygen, sulfur, selenium and tellurium, radioactive polonium and synthetic ununhexium (livermorium). These elements, their bio-geological cycles and interactions with metals still have many un-revealed scientific curiosities and technological potentials. The chalcogen cycle also forms the basis of several environmental technologies to treat pollution. From an industrial view-point, the unregulated discharge of metal contaminated materials, in the form of air emissions, liquid and solid wastes, into the natural environment have shown to cause significant adverse effects on both human health and the environment. The recent scientific, medical and technological advances have imparted widespread discussions pertaining to heavy metal removal and recovery from contaminated environments, e.g. wastewater streams. In this line of progressive research, emerging environmental technologies have proved to be efficient for preventing and controlling heavy metal pollution, as well as to recover some of the precious metals present in wastewater. For instance, owing to their high microbial biomass and ability to immobilize compounds, biofilm engineering allows innovative practices such as the development of sensitive and rapid (bio)monitoring methods for heavy metals in the environment, the use of biogenically produced nanoparticles for heavy metal removal, and the development of sophisticated analytical tools to understand chalcogen based biofilm interactions. 

In this thematic session, both conventional and non-conventional areas of environmental science and environmental (bio)technology that address chalcogen and heavy metal removal/recovery based topics will be discussed in the form of ORAL presentation (15 min) and FLASH presentations (3 min) by the participants. We look forward to receiving your abstract submissions for this special session by July 25, 2016 and hope to facilitate an exciting discussion during CESE-2016.
