Erik de Ruyter van Steveninck PhD, MSc

Biography

Dr Erik de Ruyter van Steveninck is aquatic and marine ecologist at UNESCO-IHE. He brings in almost 30 years of experience in research and education related to ecological processes, mainly in rivers (plankton development and water quality) and coastal zones (coral reefs, sea grasses, mangroves).

After focusing on departmental management for about 10 years, his main interest is in education and capacity building. Some of his main past and present activities include:

  • development and delivery,  jointly with UNEP-GPA, of the course ‘Improving municipal wastewater management in coastal cities’. Over 1,800 experts from 67 countries have benefited from this training;
  • development of the Cap-Net/UNESCO-IHE training manual 'IWRM as a tool for adaptation to climate change' (www.cap-net.org);
  • annual delivery of the UNESCO-IHE on-line course and face-to-face course 'IWRM as a tool for adaptation to climate change' and delivery of a number of related short courses for various target groups;
  • coordination of the training/study tours programme within the EU-CHINA River Basin Management Programme ; and
  • implementation of the NPT and NICHE capacity building programmes on Water and Environmental Resources Management at the National University of Rwanda; Coastal Zone Management at the Ha Noi Water Resources University in Viet Nam; and Water Quality Monitoring at the Cape Peninsular University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa.

Erik de Ruyter van Steveninck has lived and worked in the Caribbean and has carried out projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
