Biography

Jan Luijendijk has over 35 years of professional experience in the field of Land and Water Engineering, Integrated Water Resources Development, Knowledge networking and Capacity Building Programs for the water sector. Starting to work as assistant Professor in Land and Water Development at the Delft University of Technology for 10 years he joined (UNESCO-) IHE-Delft in 1986. Since then he had a variety of scientific and management positions.

For two terms (8 years) he was Vice-Rector of IHE and Head of the Hydraulic Engineering Department and later Head of the Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management Department. As a senior Project Director of several of IHE’s strategic long-term Capacity Building Programs he has been active in developing countries for the last 25 years in Asia, East-Africa and the Middle East.

He has built up his extensive international experience through participation in shorter and longer feasibility, formulation, review and evaluation missions for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Dutch Government and other international organizations to Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Libya, Peru, South Korea, Rwanda, Sudan, Surinam, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen.

Simultaneously he initiated and facilitated Knowledge Networks during the last 10-15 years to activate and stimulate applied research and other collaborative work, like joint curriculum development in the Nile region (NBCBN with Egypt, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, D.R. Congo and Uganda), Indonesia (CKNet-INA) and the Asia-Pacific region (APWF Network of Water Knowledge Hubs).

Recently he also became manager of the ADB-UNESCO-IHE Partnership Fund and is one of the initiators of the International Water Leadership Program (IWLP) in cooperation with Nyenrode University and the International Water Center (IWC) in Brisbane, Australia.
