Biography
Michael joined the Environmental Engineering and Water Technology (EEWT) Department in September 2014. His research activities are focused on improving the design and management of urban drainage, and in particular their behaviour in response to extreme precipitation and flooding. Climate change, urban growth and economic development present key challenges and opportunities for cities in the 21st Century. He is also researching how cities can become more resilient to flooding and have developed methods to understand flood impacts, including damage to buildings, transport networks and impacts on human health. I have applied these methods to evaluate the effectiveness of flood mitigation strategies under different scenarios. At UNESCO-IHE, he is coordinating several modules on the Urban Water and Sanitation Program, including Urban Drainage, and he has taught water management and GIS in Colombia.
Before joining IHE, he was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Water Systems at the University of Exeter in the UK from 2010 to 2014. There, he worked on a EU FP7 Funded project Collaborative Research on Flood Resilience in Urban Areas (CORFU), studying the impacts of floods in several European and Asian Cities. Before that, he was an engineer from 2007 to 2010 at Atkins Limited, an international firm of consulting engineers, and gained much practical experience working on water management projects. He graduated from the University of Bristol in the Department of Civil Engineering, where he researched flood forecasting using radar rainfall data. He graduated with a First Class degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Bristol in 2003, where he spent one year at INSA Lyon, in France.
