Michelle Kooy PhD, MSc
Senior Lecturer in Water Governance
Biography
Dr. Michelle Kooy joined the Department of Integrated Water Systems & Governance at UNESCO-IHE in 2012. Prior to that, she worked in various capacities in the field of urban water services, flood resilience, and urban planning, as a: human geographer, international development policy researcher, urban development program manager, and aid advisor to donors. All of her work has focused on combining issues of social equity with ecological sustainability. Her research interests combine a focus on both the conceptual and applied dimensions of water governance, in order to understand decision making processes shaping uneven allocations of water resources and risks across urban/rural boundaries.
At UNESCO-IHE Michelle is member of the Water Governance chair group in the Department of Integrated Water Systems and Governance, where she teaches, mentors PhD and MSc students, and coordinates the research phase of the Water Governance & Management MSc. Michelle is cross-appointed to the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam, and is an Associate Editor of WIRES-Water.
