Nepali community centres gain digital library skills

HealthNet Nepal, in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, conducted an eight-day training course on digital libraries for members of seven Community Multimedia Centers (CMC) and two Community Learning Centers (CLC) recently.
Digital library technology provides CMCs and CLCs with better delivery and storing of information. Since libraries contain huge quantities of data, the development of digital libraries and subsequent customization can be very helpful for people running the libraries.
Head of the UNESCO Kathmandu Office Axel Plathe said: “This gives CMCs and CLCs the possibility to develop resource centres consisting of indigenous knowledge and locally generated information in the local language.”
The main purpose of the training, involving participants from eight districts in Nepal, was to familiarize them with knowledge about digital libraries by teaching website design and the Greenstone Digital Library (GDSL) system.
The instruction provided hands-on training to CMC and CLC staff interested in building digital libraries and library management systems in their respective CMCs and CLCs. They will now be able to create databases, either online or on CD-ROMS. This will help to share locally developed knowledge with other CMC centres.
“After this training I will be able to manage our library better and people will also have better access to information,” said Laxmi Neupane from the Kapilavastu Community Multimedia Centre.
