Flood Risk Mapping Under Uncertainty: Application to Sungai Johor Basin, Malaysia

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Currently, flood hazard mapping is often implemented without a serious consideration of the large number of uncertainty sources such as flood frequency analysis, topographic data, hydraulic modeling and inundation mapping.

A slight uncertainty in estimating hydrologic flow can cause uncertainty in estimating the water surface elevation in a channel, which in turn can cause uncertainty in mapping the flood inundation. Given the current state of uncertainty and recent advances in various individual components, an integrated framework for flood inundation mapping is needed.
