Topic

Treatment of petroleum-contaminated wastewater using constructed wetlands

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Petroleum effluents are wastes originating from industries primarily engaged in refining crude oil and manufacturing fuels, lubricants and petrochemical intermediates. Large volumes of fresh water are extracted for use by these Industries and similarly large volumes of wastewater that contain dissolved recalcitrant organic compounds such as polymers, surfactants, and heavy oil, polycyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, naphthylenic acids and huge amounts of heavy metals are generated and discharged into the environment. These Petroleum-derived contaminants constitute one of the most prevalent sources of contaminants that are toxic to many organisms, including humans.

This study aims at using constructed wetland technology to treat this type of wastewater in a developing country where effective, low cost wastewater treatment strategies are critically needed.

This study also seeks to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment, improve the quality of water and livelihood of the affected community.
