Flood Inundation Modelling Under Uncertainty: Estimation, Visualisation and Communication

Research Summary

Flood hazard risk is a threat to human beings and infrastructure. To alleviate effects of risk, efforts are focused on gaining a better understanding the causal factors responsible for occurrence of floods and the minimization of “consequences. The availability of timely prior accurate predictions on the possible locations of flooding helps reduce the consequence of flood hazards.

The common practice is the use of binary flood hazard extent maps for the communication of flood risk. However, over the last two decades, there has been a growing interest in estimating the uncertainty associated with the modelling process. Consequently, one of the main challenges is to identify, quantify and give model output in probabilistic terms to the end users. In addition, cyclic interaction with stakeholders and decision makers is necessary to improve the effective communication and understanding of the probabilistic model output.
