Memory of the World meeting started today in Mexico

The eleventh meeting of the Regional Committee of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (MOWLAC) started today in Mexico City, Mexico. The promotion of the Programme in the region and the evaluation of current nominations for the Register are on the agenda of the meeting.
The meeting will be held in three locations, the Sante Fe Campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology, el Antiguo Colegio de las Vizcainas, and the Mexican National Museum of Anthropology, on 26, 27 and 28 October respectively. Experts from Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Uruguay and Mexico will discuss regional experiences in the preservation and access to audiovisual documentary heritage. They will also assess nominations submitted this year for inclusion in the Memory of the World Register by Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Three open sessions will feature the following presentations:
Ten Years of the Regional Committee, by the founders of MOWLAC;
Family Archives, by Ricardo Elizondo, Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM).
Preservation for All, by Lourdes Blanco, International consultant on Memory of the World;
World Digital Library, by Abdelaziz Abid, former UNESCO's coordinator of the Memory of the World Programme.
This meeting coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. It will also mark the 10th anniversary of MOWLAC.

The Memory of the World Programme was set up by UNESCO in 1992 to preserve valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world, and to ensure their wide dissemination. The Programme regional committees provide a mechanism for cooperation beyond the national level in order to pursue the Programme’s objectives.
