What made you decide to study this particular programme?
There is a great need for an integrated approach to Water Science and Engineering which calls for professionals with a higher degree of specialization as well as generalists equipped to lead and manage multi-disciplinary efforts, individuals and organizations in the water sector worldwide.
HELWD is a highly specialized program, which focuses mainly on irrigation, drainage engineering and flood protection. Having a passion for irrigation and drainage engineering, this was the ultimate Master's for me.
Can you say something about studying in Delft/the Netherlands?
If one wants to see the world in union then UNESCO-IHE is the place to be. It was my pleasure and privilege to work with people from different walks of life, race, religion and belief. I couldn't imagine that in 18 months I would have a second family around the world, wow!
What kind of professional background do you need to succeed in this programme?
One needs a background in irrigation engineering, water resources engineering and management, agricultural engineering, civil engineering or related studies. It is also equally important to have a working experience in land and water development projects. This will make someone realize the relationship between theory and practice.
Why should new students/water professionals choose this programme?
Question: Is there enough land, water, and human capacity to produce food for the growing population over the next 50 years - or we will "run out" of water?
The comprehensive assessment's answer: It is possible to produce the food - but it is probable that today's food production and environmental trends, if continued, will lead to crisis in many parts of the world. If only we act to improve water use in agriculture we will meet the acute fresh water challenges facing human kind over the coming 50 years.
Thinking differently about water is essential for achieving our triple goal of ensuring food security, reduction of poverty, and conserving ecosystems.
Do you have any advice for new students?
It's rosy to be in the Netherlands, but at UNESCO-IHE you really need to work very hard. However you have to strike a balance between work and leisure. Just take the opportunity to visit some of the beautiful European cities; Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Rome, London and of course not forgetting the heart of Europe, Amsterdam.
What are you going to do once back home?
My participation in HELWP took my Engineering profession to a level that I have never dreamt of. I will help Zimbabwe and Southern Africa in the development of irrigation and drainage systems through my involvement in the overall planning, designing, construction, sustainable operation, maintenance and management of irrigation schemes, irrigation research and the provision of irrigation engineering, advisory and regulatory services to irrigation clientele.
