What made you decide to study this particular programme?
Over 2 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation worldwide. "I wanted to make a difference for my country in my own small way!" I decided to be a sanitary professional!
Can you say something about studying in Delft/the Netherlands? (Cultural and social experiences)
The setting and atmosphere that the city of Delft offers, is just perfect for MSc studies. The balance of historic site scenery coupled with a touch of some nice restaurants and bars ensures an environment not only perfect for study, but also for relaxation and having a good time. Just the perfect mix when one is far from home.
What kind of professional background do you need to succeed in this programme?
To ensure that one does not find the program too aggressive, an engineering background is quite cardinal. However, experience in a sanitation environment would be helpful.
Why should new students/water professional choose this programme?
No nation in the world has ever achieved its true development minus addressing issues surrounding water and basic sanitation. Provision of basic sanitation worldwide has continued to lag behind. By the year 2015, we are very unlikely to meet the MDG's associated with access to basic sanitation. As such, we must double our efforts to ensure progress in this area. Public health is one of the key element required to ensure sustainable development of any nation. And as developing countries, as well as countries in transition we are all lagging far behind in achieving these goals surrounding basic sanitation. Become a sanitary professional and play your part in this exiting time lying ahead where attention and focus must be made on sanitation! We are the future that guarantees this sustainable development that we sought after!
Do you have any advice for new students?
Water is life but sanitation is health!
What are you going to do once back home?
With the skills acquired during the program, I'll immediately want to play my part in ensuring that no child dies from preventable illnesses such as diarrhoea arising from a lack of access to basic sanitation, and to ultimately play a part in ensuring that all citizens in my country have access to basic sanitation!
