Media Statistics 

New technologies are transforming the ways in which newspapers and broadcast programmes are produced and accessed by audiences. But is greater access to information leading to more diverse content? Demand has never been greater for internationally comparable statistics that policymakers and professionals can use to identify trends within countries and across regions.


What is the role of the UIS?


The UIS is developing a new survey on print, broadcast and digital media, which is being pilot tested in a growing number of countries on a yearly basis. This survey focuses on key issues, such as changes in the number of radio and TV channels and newspapers, the concentration of media ownership, and the rise of digital news outlets.

Objectives and challenges


Our goal is to provide a comprehensive perspective on how different factors and trends are shaping the media at the global and national levels. However, there are two major challenges. First, there is a general lack of media data, especially in developing countries. Second, new indicators and instruments are needed to reflect the changing ways in which media content is produced, transmitted and accessed.


In response, the Institute is refining survey instruments in consultation with an international group of experts and UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector. At the same time, the UIS is putting in place training programmes for national statisticians in order to improve data collection and quality at the national and international levels.
