Recognizing that addressing inequalities within and between countries is critical to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, H.E. Mr. Oh Joon, the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is convening a Special Meeting on Inequality on 30 March 2016 at UN headquarters in New York. Participants will review, at the global level, the key drivers of inequality as well as put forward recommendations for tackling it. Mr. Oh and Mr. Jeffrey Sachs, a Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), will talk about the Special Meeting at the Spokesperson’s noon briefing on 30 March.

About the ECOSOC Special Meeting on Inequality
The President of ECOSOC has convened this one day Meeting which will bring together leading experts from academia, government, the private sector, the UN system and other stakeholders to identify policy options and approaches for reducing inequality.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—was officially launched on 1 January 2016 and aims to end poverty, tackle climate change as well as combat inequalities. Goal 10 of the SDGs pledges to reduce inequality within and among countries and will provide the foundation for the discussions at the Meeting.
