Avinash C. Tyagi

Biography

Mr Avinash C Tyagi is the Secretary-General of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) since January 2012.  He was the Director of the Climate and Water department of the World Meteorological Organization for nearly 8 years. An Indian water management expert, he has worked for over 28 years in India and was Commissioner of Policy and Planning in the Union Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India before he joined the WMO.

 A graduate in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and postgraduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Mr Tyagi has a long experience in the hydrology, flood forecasting and flood management in major rivers basins of India and has dealt with various facets of flood management. Mr Tyagi is an ardent advocate of importance of community participation in the water sector, and has been actively engaging in dialogue with the stakeholder communities. 

In his earlier position of Director of the Hydrology and Water Resources Department at the WMO, Mr Tyagi was responsible for providing support to the member countries of the WMO water resources management and flood management. The Hydrology programme of WMO is also engaged in the mitigation of the water related natural disasters around the world. As Director of Water and Climate Department, in addition to his earlier responsibilities he is actively engaged in providing support to countries in climate related activities including adaptations to climate change.
