Staff in focus

Mick van der Wegen

Associate Professor of Estuarine Dynamics

Mick joined UNESCO-IHE in 1997 as a junior researcher, after he graduated from TU Delft. For the last three years he has also been working part-time at Deltares. “At first when I worked here, it was a family type of organization; you joined the family. There was a strong sense of community, with everyone taking care of each other and the students. It has now changed into a more professional Institute, with a greater and a higher level of academic output and quality. UNESCO-IHE always has had a pioneering role and I like this about the Institute. We are in a niche market of combining the needs of the Global South with our state-of-the-art research. This unique position is challenging and makes it worth working at UNESCO-IHE.”

PhD fellow

I am a Civil Engineer from India and obtained my MSc degree in Municipal Water and Infrastructure at UNESCO-IHE in 2009. I started my PhD in 2013. At UNESCO-IHE you have people and knowledge from all over the world with different expertise that enables learning from each other and expands ones personal and professional network. My future ambition is work on urban adaptation aspects in developing countries, especially in India though an action research approach that involves stakeholders on the ground, academics and policy makers. This mode of working will also help me to be in touch with the Institute to keep my knowledge up-to-date.
