Online course on Water and Environmental Law and Policy

This course focuses on how water and environmental resources can be managed in a specific context using the disciplines of law, politics and policy making. The goal is to introduce the student to the complexities of the relationship between water, environmental and economic issues; the relationship between law, politics and policy making at local, national, regional and international level.

Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:

  1. have enhanced knowledge of international water and environmental law and understand how it influences national decision-making on resource use
  2. have enhanced knowledge of regional and national water and environmental problems and understand how law, politics and policies are used to address these problems
  3. analyze the interrelations between the various issues; and to develop analytical academic skills, policies strategies and negotiation techniques

The 16 weeks of the course are divided into 5 sub-courses (units) that cover the following subjects:

  1. Introduction to the Water and Environmental Law and Policy (2 units)
  2. Theory & Methods in Law and Policy (2 units)
  3. International Water and Environmental Governance (6 units)
  4. National Water and Environmental Governance (3 units)
  5. Dispute Resolution and Prevention (3 units)
