Climate Change Adaptation Research Grants Program

East Asia and Pacific
East Asia and Pacific

This project aims to develop regional coastal templates based on sediment budgets, and to extend these with a framework for considering coastal behaviour in the four key coastal provinces around Australia. The modelling framework is intended to be applied to particular coastal locations, in conjunction with future projections of sea-level change and demographic pressures, to provide guidance to the most appropriate adaptation strategies, such as suitable setback lines, more focused dune management, or beach nourishment and/or protection. The project will integrate best practice engineering approaches with geologically-informed assessments of sediment budget and past coastal behaviour to enable managers and policy-makers to incorporate estimated risk into considerations of adaptation options, across a broad range of coastal environments, with greater confidence that the underlying risk assessment is transparently evidence-based. This project is funded by the Australian government and is undertaken by a consortium comprising Univ. of Sydney, Univ. of Queensland, Univ. of Wollongong and UNESCO-IHE.
