The Republic of Georgia is a country rich in water and other natural resources, but in the absence of clear environmental laws and regulations governing pollution and natural resource conservation, the condition of the country’s resources has suffered. Many surface waters are polluted and new hydropower projects are planned with insufficient consideration of environmental impacts. Inappropriate irrigation and agricultural practices have degraded large areas of arable land through erosion and salinization of soils. The combined effect of these impacts is a widespread undermining of the natural resource base and ecosystem services that Georgia depends upon for sustainable development. In this project UNESCO-IHE is providing technical assistance and capacity development for the Ministry of the Environment and water authorities. We supported local water authorities in the development of water safety plans and provided training in Water Safety Planning and Water Transport and Distribution. Technical assistance is also being provided to the Ministry of Environment in the development of a national methodology to determine environmental flows in rivers. This project includes staff from both the Hydrology and Water Resources and Water Supply Engineering Chair Groups.
