The successful cooperation between HidroEX and UNESCO-IHE dates back to 2008 when HidroEx became a UNESCO category 2 centre. A first phase of co-operation was formulated in a learning-by-doing manner by conducting a 3 weeks appreciation course for HidroEX and Ministry staff at UNESCO-IHE in Delft and by having 3 Brazilian MSc students completing their studies at UNESCO-IHE. Since then, a detailed work plan was put together by UNESCO-IHE experts for the capacity development of HidroEx in the next years. The workplan envisages strengthening capacities in the field of academic and administrative management of HidroEx. The collaboration foresees a broad spectrum of activities, including upgrading libraries, laboratories, staff development through short courses and Master of Science, staff exchange, study tours, pilot demonstration and best practice in project management.. The collaboration also hinges on inclusive partnership development with other higher education institutes in Brazil, the rest of Latin America as well Lusophone Africa.
