The primary goal of the West African Water, Sanitation Hygiene Program (WA-WASH) is to increase sustainable access to safe water and sanitation, and improve hygiene in West Africa. It is proposed to accomplish this by introducing innovative and low-cost water and sanitation technologies and promoting adequate hygienic behaviors at community level, by developing practical models of sustainable WASH service delivery, by facilitating cooperation and creating synergies between WA-WASH and other relevant USAID/West Africa programs and priorities in the region, and by increasing the capacity of national and regional institutions to replicate these approaches and models throughout the region and by facilitating knowledge sharing among the WA-WASH countries and beyond. The project outcomes required to achieve this goal are captured in the following four program objectives. Objective 1: Support catalytic approaches to accelerate regional access to improved water supply/sanitation services and improved hygiene behaviors. Objective 2: Develop and implement improved models for sustainability of rural and peri-urban WASH service delivery that are replicable throughout West Africa. Objective 3: Build synergies between WASH interventions and critical USAID/West Africa regional priorities related to food security, climate change, and sustainable resource management. Objective 4: Strengthen regional enabling environment and capacity for WASH to achieve WASH MDGs in West Africa. UNESCo-IHE has been involved in Capacity Building of Regional WASH Institutions.
